4 Big Reasons to start a Kids Kitchen Garden
Most parents we work with want their children to spend less time on their iPad, TV, and video games, and gardening is a great way to achieve this goal. Many of us live in condos or homes that don’t have a large yard, making a Kid's Kitchen Garden a great place to start. Recent research shows that gardening with your kids has benefits ranging from their ability to learn to making them more interested in food, leading to healthier diets.
1. If they grow it, they will eat it: Kids typically love to dig up what they have grown and get curious about what it tastes like.
2. Digging around in dirt can boost kid’s immune systems: Many studies show that kids who grow up on farms have far fewer autoimmune disorders, asthma, and fewer allergies
3. Gardening can help kids with anxiety: Gardening can be highly therapeutic. A study from the Netherlands showed that after 30 minutes of gardening, people reported feeling less stressed and had a positive mood.
4. Gardening can ground your children with nature: When you teach a child to grow something from a tiny seed, they gain ownership over what they are cultivating. Children will start to grow more attached to the things they are growing, be kinder to them, and become less fearful of other plants and bugs, which can lead them to be more patient and kinder as they grow and develop.
Understanding where your food comes from could be the first step to your child expanding their diet.
